Litter is the most visible sign of pollution. Litter is not good to look at and can cause harm to people, wildlife, and our waterways. litter isn't just unsightly to look at, but it also is a prime target for pest animals and rodents such as rats that can bring and spread germs and diseases. Litter is wasteful and extremely costly to clean up and maintain. Litter is unpleasant for tourist, it can cause tourist to view your state in a bad way.
Litter can end up just about anywhere. a plastic bottle for example can be thrown near a waterway and get carried by the wind into an ocean. The ocean is then capable of carrying the plastic bottle long distances to impact on beaches. The water bottle is unsightly for the people at the beach and tourist who are at that beach. This can leave a bad view for tourist and maybe even make a tourist never want to come back for another visit.
Litter often clogs storm water drains, affecting water quality and impacting on those plants and animals that live in and around the littered waterways and coasts. Litter can cause many problems when its comes to our waterways and storm drains. Liter can cause the drains and waterways to be clogged and backed up which can cause a lot of trouble and problems that can come out to be extremely pricey in the end.
One major problem with littering is how it effects the animals in our environment. litter such as plastic can cause animals such as birds to choke when they mistake it for food. Eventually when a bird eats a lot of litter, plastic can accumulate in the stomach of a bird, while it doesn't digest or decompose, the birds stomach will not be able to hold food in its stomach and the bird will eventually starve to death.
Every year their is over 51 billion pieces of litter that land on U.S. roadways each year. This is approximately 6,728 items per mile. Every year the U.S. pays about $11.5 billion every year for cleanup costs.
Below is a picture of a turtle named peanut. When peanut was just a baby turtle, he was swimming through a river and got stuck in the plastic ring packaging from a six pack of soda. As peanut got older his shell also got larger. Due to the plastic litter that was stuck on his shell, he began to grow like a peanut.
